Found this photo of myself in 2010 presenting my final project in architecture school. Ah, the memories! Look at the model - I remember working in my studio late into the night for weeks and months, surviving on chips and coke (I don't recommend it). My background in architecture has greatly influenced the way I think and approach all my art projects (those chopsticks and teabag and celery-stamping pieces you saw? They required a fair bit of planning in design and structure).
I think something special happens when you combine your knowledge/training and your hobbies, and create something new out of it. I used to think that I'm supposed to just focus on doing one thing only because of my background and training when really, the possibilities of what you can do are endless.
What skills and interests do you have? A baker who likes cars? How about baking and selling your cakes in a car? A doctor who loves to draw? How about doing medical illustrations? An engineer who loves to dance? How about coming up with crazy high-tech dance shoes? What were you trained in, and what do you like to do? Share them here :)
Mix them up, and create something new. Interesting things happen when you are open to experimenting and mixing things up a bit, when you try something different, and when you are willing to question and break free from the rules others have made for you.
